Scarce One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to John P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with an unusual design of a "1" surrounded by a scalloped border with tassels. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A large spider crack below one handle. Small base chips. A small restored rim chip. Some light surface wear. Minor traces of old yellow paint to surface. H 9 1/2".
