Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Impressed Horseshoe, Edgefield District, SC origin, circa 1840-1850, ovoid jar with pronounced throw lines, narrow, semi-rounded mouth, and flattened lug handles, the surface covered in a glossy light-brown alkaline glaze accented with green and gray runs. Five punctates, denoting five gallons, incised at shoulder. Impressed horseshoe at base. Provenance: Richard and Cindy Pearce Collection. A 2 1/2" shallow, in-the-firing flake to bottom edge. Two other, much smaller in-the-firing chips to bottom edge. Other minor base chips. A 7/8" chip to one handle. A minor, very tight surface line to top of proper left handle and a very tight vertical surface line descending from rim above, measuring 3" vertically on proper left side of jar, not visible on interior. A small in-the-firing ping to proper right side of jar. What looks like a line ascending the base appears to be only staining. H 15 1/4".
