Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock with Lid, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1875, wide, cylindrical crock with extruded lug handles and incised banding to shoulder, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with drooping floral motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a wavy line of cobalt below each handle. Includes lid with swag decoration and highlight around base of knob, probably original to the crock, fired a different color due to a different placement in the kiln. Crock with a 3/4" chip to one handle, a 1 3/8" wide surface crack to exterior of rim, a small and minor chip to exterior of rim, two minor chips to interior of rim, an in-the-firing base chip, and small in-the-firing ping to base. Lid with heavy chipping to flange on underside, two chips to knob, and some whitish residue to top. Diam. (of crock) 8 1/4" ; H (of crock, including lid) 6 1/2".
