Scarce Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA origin, circa 1970, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with hand-modeled and applied clay face including broad ears, nose with depressed nostrils, smiling closed mouth, and glazed kaolin eyes with brushed pupils. Depressed manipulation to the cheek and eye area. Surface covered in a dark-brown alkaline glaze. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. An earlier work by Meaders, indicated by the reductive modeling, lack of teeth, and style of glaze, including the latter's application over the eyes. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
