Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, attributed to Harvey Reinhardt, Vale, NC, second quarter 20th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with tall, flaring spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including large ears with raised edge, two-tone eyes, eyebrows, Roman nose, upward-curling mustache, and broad mouth with numerous applied china teeth. Surface covered in a mottled-brown alkaline glaze with traces of rutile. Few face vessels from this influential North Carolina pottery are known. Provenance: Carl and Marian Mullis Collection; On long-term loan to Colonial Williamsburg, 2019 to 2023. Chips to one ear. A minor chip to one eye and two small chips to the eye's lower lid. A tiny nick to nose. H 6 5/8".
