Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Brushed and Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a four-petaled flower with heavy striping throughout and scalloped, bullseye pattern to the center, flanked by brushed leaves. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark and capacity mark. Beautiful, abstract design with unusual composition of both slip-trailed and brushed cobalt elements, all on a desirable one-gallon size. This jug is among the finest Cowden floral-decorated pieces of this capacity that we have offered. Very nice condition. Light staining throughout. A faint 2 3/4" vertical line to shoulder area on front. A very faint 7/8" vertical line at base on front. H 11 1/2".
