Unusual Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Stamped "BROWN POTTERY," Arden, NC, circa 1930, ovoid jug with tall, flaring spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including eyes with incised pupils and lashes, eyebrows with incised hairs, pointed nose with carved nostrils, ears with pierced interiors, and open mouth with broken china teeth.. Surface covered in a reddish-brown Albany slip glaze. Underside impressed with small "BROWN POTTERY" maker's mark above the incised number, "47." This example, potted with an unusually long neck, is the tallest face jug bearing the small-sized "BROWN POTTERY" stamp that we have offered. In-the-firing loss to one ear. A tiny nick to opposite ear. A tiny spout chip. Small chips to one eyelid. A small chip to bottom edge of nose and tiny bit of clay adhered to nose. Some small in-the-firing pings to surface. A minor glaze flake to base. H 9".
