Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "T.S. BALSLEY / MANUFACTURER / DETROIT, MICH.," circa 1859-1877, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a stem bearing two open-centered blossoms and a turnip-shaped bud. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Few signed examples of Michigan stoneware are known. A 4" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on side of churn. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim on opposite side of churn. Light scattered exfoliation to shoulder on reverse and base. Some very minor exfoliation to shoulder on churn's left side and left handle. Wear to inner rim for lid. Two in-the-firing chips to underside. H 19 1/4".
