Important Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Game Bird Scene, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO, N.Y.," circa 1870, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed game bird design. The bird is depicted with turned head, raised leg, detailed neck, and spot-decorated body. A tree stands to the bird's left and three large bushes are slip-trailed along a stylized ground below. An exceptional design applied in thick trails of bold cobalt. This particular decoration is undoubtedly based upon game bird designs found on stoneware made at the John Burger pottery in Rochester, NY. 8 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. 1 1/2" hole and sealed cracks in underside. 4" and 3 1/2" vertical cracks at base. Small chip to interior of rim. H 16 5/8".
