Rare and Fine Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Manhattan or NJ origin, circa 1750-1790, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated on the front with a large slip-trailed flowering plant featuring blossoms in the form of spirals embellished with dashes. Reverse decorated with spiraling slip-trailed decoration emanating from the base of the handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Iron-oxide coated mouth. The style of the decoration and spout construction date this work to an exceptionally early period in American stoneware production. Desirable small size, the front featuring unusually-elaborate decoration for the period. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 8 1/4".
