Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a stump surrounded by heavy ground cover. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Fry to cobalt. Water glass staining to exterior and interior. A rim chip on reverse. A tiny rim chip on side of crock. A 1 3/8" hairline to edge of one handle. An approximately 8" x 3 1/2" group of spider lines on underside, not visible on interior, including one line that forms a 1 1/4" x 3 1/4" T at base on front. H 12 3/4".
