Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a leafy stem bearing three tulip blossoms and a rarely-seen elongated blossom with spotted interior. The depiction of the flowers with three differently-oriented petals- the first blossom with splayed petals, the second with inward-curving petals, and the third with typical petals, is highly unusual. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Some fry to cobalt. A jagged top-to-bottom crack from rim on reverse, extending across underside. Long, tight spider lines to front, right, and left sides of jar. A glazed-over in-the-firing iron ping to base on front. A small in-the-firing chip to underside at edge. H 13 3/4".
