Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Temperance Jug, Indiana origin, late 19th century, semi-ovoid jug with squared spout, the handle modeled in the form of a snake with incised scaling, pierced eyes and nostrils, and open mouth, coiled around the neck of the jug, its head facing the spout. Shoulder decorated with a modeled and applied skull and cross bones and midsection decorated with a hand-modeled turtle. Surface covered in a mottled, translucent honey-to-brown-colored glaze. Impressive in size and unusual in its glaze, this jug features a lesser-seen skull and cross bones motif, more direct than the reptiles in its message about the danger of the alcohol within. Provenance: Collection of Michael Hall and Pat Glascock, Hamtramck, MI. Turtle's head restored. A minor chip to spout. H 10 1/2".
