Estimate: $8,000-$12,000. About Estimates   About Shipping

Minimum Bid: $2,000.

An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. The price ranges for each lot are considered conservative in value, and are listed as a courtesy to our bidders to give them an idea of how much they may be expected to pay to win the item. It is entirely possible for an item to sell for less or more than the given estimate.

Unlike almost every major auction house in the country, we handle our own shipping in-house. We understand how frustrating it can be to have to work with third-party shippers to have your objects delivered to you. Meanwhile, we also understand how important it is for you to receive your objects safely. We have over 40 years of experience safely packing antique ceramics. By default your invoice will include a shipping total via UPS Ground; you can also, of course, pick up objects at our gallery. Please feel free to contact us if you would like a quote. (A very few lots will have notes at the end of their descriptions letting you know that the object is too big or fragile for us to handle shipping ourselves.)

Outstanding Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Molded Eagle and Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed "J. Robinson / Middlebury / Summit Co / Ohio," circa 1875, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout and applied vertical handles, decorated at the shoulder with a molded, applied, and cobalt-highlighted design of an eagle perched atop a shield, flanked by cornucopias brimming with fruit. A banner above the eagle reads "NE PLUS ULTRA," loosely translating to "THERE IS NONE BETTER." Inscribed below with the large slip-trailed signature, "J. Robinson / Middlebury / Summit Co. / Ohio," underscored by a flourish. Reverse decorated with large slip-trailed floral design including a hanging bud and detailed leaves, below a cobalt-script, "4," surrounded by a wreath-like flourish. Wavy slip-trailed line decoration to tops of handle. This vessel's refined molding mixed with rigorous slip-trailing creates an appealing juxtaposition of decorative elements. Among the better examples of Ohio stoneware that we have offered in recent years. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, acquired by the consignor in the upper peninsula of Michigan decades ago. Two small chips to underside. Two small, glazed-over base chips on reverse. Some tight surface lines to base area. H 18 1/2".
