Rare Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Snake Jug, Boonville, MO origin, circa 1890, ovoid jug with tall spout, the handle in the form of a hand-modeled and incised snake with turned head and open mouth. Body of jug decorated with two additional applied snakes, one with open mouth. Surface covered in a chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze and sgraffito-decorated with an incised bark to the jug's surface and three different patterns to the snakes' bodies; the snake forming the handle features large, curved scaling, a second snake is decorated with arrow-like patterning, and the third is detailed with large chip-carved marking. Underside incised with a large "X," possibly denoting "poison." Made as a temperance piece warning of the evils of alcohol consumption. Provenance: Collection of Michael Hall and Pat Glascock, Hamtramck, MI. Restoration to a 5/8" section of snake handle's upper jaw. A tiny chip to interior of spout. H 5".
