Extremely Rare Small-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Kaolin Slip Decoration, attributed to Collin Rhodes, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated on opposing sides with a slip-trailed floral motif, one side depicting three daisies, another depicting two daisies flanking a cattail. Surface covered in dark-olive alkaline glaze. The smallest slip-decorated example of Edgefield stoneware that we have ever offered, this jug measures just 70% of one quart. A related one-quart jug was sold in Crocker Farm's Spring 2022 auction, lot 29. Provenance: Originally surfaced in Charleston, SC. Combining size, decoration, and an outstanding spherical form, this jug ranks among the finest examples of Rhodes stoneware that we have ever offered.
