Exceptional Large-Sized Redware Cream Pitcher with Mocha-Style Seaweed Decoration, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, ovoid pitcher with flared collar and elaborate footed base, the lead-glazed surface covered in cream-yellow slip and decorated with manganese drips resembling seaweed in the style of English mochaware. This pitcher is the first Strasburg redware example that we have offered featuring this glaze treatment. While unquestionably Strasburg in origin, its Eberly attribution is based on its distinctive foot, also seen on Eberly vases, as well as the specific style and application of the seaweed motif, noted on large Eberly vases or umbrella stands. Among the finest Strasburg creamers that we have ever offered. Very nice condition with some wear to spout, rim, and handle. H 7 1/2".
