Multi-Glazed Redware Jar, Stamped "S. BELL & SON. / STRASBURG.," VA origin, circa 1890, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the lead-glazed surface dipped in a yellowish slip and decorated with large sponged spots of copper and manganese. With this jar, the slip coating is lightly-applied revealing colorful spotting inherent to the clay below. Lead-and-manganese-glazed interior. Crazing to surface. Two in-the-firing contact marks to left of maker's mark. An approximately 1" x 1/2" area of wear near base. Wear to glaze on interior. Wear to rim. Three very short cracks from rim. H 9".
