Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.M..BURNEY / JORDAN.," NY State origin, circa 1850-1855, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and tapered spout molding, brush-decorated with a large, abstract design depicting a heart-shaped flower or turnip accented with spots, flanked by other flowers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. While we have sold a small number of other examples of stoneware bearing a simple "JORDAN" maker's mark, this jug is the first example we have offered including the name of potter, James McBurney. Excellent condition with a short line from spout on reverse, a small in-the-firing lime ping near base, and some staining. H 15 3/4".
