Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt 1872 Date within Wreath, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT:," 1872, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of the date, "1872," surrounded by a wreath and series of spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A piece of adhered clay to shoulder beside a series of small in-the-firing surface chips. A small chip to interior of spout. A small in-the-firing chip to handle. A small area of wear to left of wreath. Other in-the-firing imperfections to surface including salt drips and small iron pings. Some staining. H 18 1/4".
