Scarce Two-Gallon Boston Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Deer Decoration, attributed to J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a stag with turned head and spotted body, reclining between a series of hills, accented with shrubs and three fences. Shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "SETH. E. PECKER / 9 ELM, ST.BOSTON." Essentially as-made condition with a salt drip to front, an unglazed in-the-firing contact mark to left edge of decoration, a few very minor surface flakes, and minor traces of old red paint. H 14".
