Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated with a horizontal stem bearing leaves and tulips. Lavish decoration with excellent color. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 1 1/8" glazed-over chip to underside of one handle. A thin 3" crack descending through left handle adjoined a thin 3" horizontal crack. A small flake to underside at edge. A tiny nick to base. A 3" hairline from rim on reverse. A small in-the-firing ping to shoulder on reverse, which is glazed over. H 11 3/4".
