Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pedestal-based urn with gadrooned body and open handles, brimming with two oversized flowers surrounded by leaves and accented with dotted trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Outstanding color and thick, enamel-like application to the cobalt slip. A tight cross-shaped crack to left of urn, measuring approximately 9" tall x 9" wide. A minor, glazed-over surface nick to left edge of decoration. A tight Y-shaped crack in underside. Two small Y-shaped surface lines, a small X-shaped surface line, and a small vertical surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. Light staining. Small scratches to Albany slip on interior. H 14 3/8".
