Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a bold slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head and elaborate tail, perched on a tree stump flanked by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This pheasant is the first Norton example depicted in this style that we have ever offered, featuring a wider neck and unusually-broad tail with open-centered feathers accented with horizontal dashes. The branch that the pheasant is perched on is also unusually wide and detailed, including dashed slip-trailing on its upper and lower edge. Among the finest Norton single-pheasant pieces that we have ever offered. Very nice condition with a thin 3 1/2" crack from rim on front, a shallow chip to one handle, a minor in-the-firing chip to bottom edge of jar, and a few chips to inner rim for lid. H 13".
