Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Standing Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, large-sized, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with spotted body and turned head, standing beside a fence with ground cover below and pine tree in the distance. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of a few four-gallon Norton deer jugs that we have ever offered, this example features a particularly large rendering of the animal, executed in dark, crisp cobalt slip. The entire design measures an impressive 11" tall by roughly 11 1/2" around the curve of the jug. Exfoliation to base area, primarily to reverse and sides. A thin 10 1/2" A-shaped crack/line to left side of jug. Small, brown-colored in-the-firing fissures to left side of jug. Two small chips to interior of spout. Some mottling to shoulder on right side of jug. Section of bubbling to cobalt on base area of design. H 18 1/4".
