Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "Feb 3. 1857 / Lm," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, 1857, rotund jar with semi-squared rim and arched tab handles, incised at the shoulder with the date, "Feb 3. 1857," followed by the initials, "Lm," for Lewis Miles, three incised punctates, and two slash marks. Surface covered in a thick, high-gloss alkaline glaze featuring lighter-colored green coloration to the upper half and speckled olive-green coloration to the lower half. An extraordinarily-potted work with a short, wide-bodied form. An approximately 8" x 8 1/2" reglued section to side of jar with coloring around the break. This damage also includes restoration to most or all of one handle of the jar as well as restoration to an approximately 8" curved section of the rim. An unrestored crack extends off from this damage and continues 2 1/4" onto underside, stopping at a filled 1" hole. H 13 1/2".
