Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Incised "Lm," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, rotund jug with stepped spout and grooved strap handle with unusually deep depression at lower terminal; incised "Lm" for Lewis Miles at the shoulder, beside two incised slash marks and three incised punctates. Surface covered in a mottled brownish alkaline glaze with runs to midsection. Fingerprints at base. Outstanding form. Excellent condition with a small chip to reverse of spout, a minor chip to front of spout, minor handle chips, and minor surface wear to body of jug. H 14 1/2".
