Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical form with circular bunghole, tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with two large tulips emanating from a central stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Relatively few Cowden & Wilcox water coolers are known. Significant restoration to bunghole and area to right of bunghole, an area of shoulder on left side of cooler's front, a small area of rim on front, and a large area of shoulder and rim on reverse. A few minor, unrestored rim chips. A 3 1/2" vertical hairline to midsection on front. Small flakes to left of decoration on front. Some minor bubbling to the cobalt. Stained spots. H 13 3/4".
