Four-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Clover Decoration and Lid, Baltimore, MD origin, second half 19th century, wide, cylindrical form with arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a two-stemmed clover plant, circa 1860. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a curving line of cobalt beneath each handle. Paired with a three-gallon lid with cobalt clover decoration around edge and cobalt highlight around knob, impressed with Peter Herrmann three-gallon capacity mark, circa 1880. Crock with several small rim chips, a 2" surface line from rim above one handle, and a small scratch to shoulder on front. Lid with chips to knob and flange on underside, as well as a 2 1/4" Y-shaped firing crack from edge. Dimensions (of cake crock): H 7 1/2" ; Diam. 14 1/2". Diam. (of lid): 14 1/4".
