Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 5 1/2" inverted A-shaped crack from rim on front. A large Y-shaped crack on underside, connecting to an approximately 9" reglued section at base. A small in-the-firing ping to front and side of jug. An in-the-firing iron ping at base on reverse. A 2 1/4" horizontal crack at base, with associated chip to interior. Two small rim chips on reverse. H 15".
