Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head and exceptionally long tail, perched on a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent condition with a few salt drips to base, a salt drip to underside, a 3 1/2" horizontal in-the-firing line at base, and minor staining. H 15".
