Rare Small-Sized Redware Presentation Jug, Incised "Mrs. H.J. Downing," probably Thomas Vickers Pottery, Chester County, PA, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base, semi-squared spout, and ribbed handle, incised "Mrs. H.J. Downing" across the midsection. Surface covered in a dark-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. This name may refer to the wife of Hunt Downing of nearby East Caln Township, where Thomas Vickers's pottery was located. Hunt Downing was a descendant of the founder of Downingtown, PA, Thomas Downing (1691-1772), ran East Caln's Washington Inn until 1816, and also served as post master of the township. Very nice condition with small spout chips and nicks to handle. H 5 1/4".
