Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT., circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed scene depicting a deer with turned head and spotted body, reclining in a field between two hills with fences. A third, small fence appears to the right of the animal. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This jar's ovoid form is less-commonly found depicting this prized Norton motif. Very nice condition with a few rim chips and the following minor flaws: a few tiny flakes under right handle, a 1 3/4" hairline from rim above right handle, a minor in-the-firing contact mark to right of decoration, a very faint 2 1/2" X-shaped surface line near base on left side (not visible on interior), and a faint in-the-firing line from rim on interior, barely visible as a light wrinkle in the clay on exterior. H 12 7/8".
