Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SAMUEL STOUT," South River, NJ origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a stylized floral motif. Impressed at shoulder with Samuel Stout maker's mark including an inverted "L" in "SAMUEL" and inverted "U" in "STOUT." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. One of only three pieces bearing this stamp that we have offered. A 1 1/4" filled and colored chip to one handle. Water glass staining to interior. Light water glass staining to exterior. H 12 3/4".
