Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Branch Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a long-tailed bird perched on a detailed branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The rendering of the bird, featuring a pointed beak, open-centered tail, and lacking a crest, is unusual in Norton stoneware production, as is the style of the branch on which it is perched. Essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to front, a small in-the-firing chip to spout, a 3 1/4" in-the-firing U-shaped line at base, and other extremely minor crazing to base. H 14".
