Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Profuse Star Decoration, Stamped "A.K. BALLARD. / BURLINGTON, VT," circa 1870, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, profusely decorated with nineteen stars surrounding a central flower blossom. Heavy spot decoration around shoulder and base. Among the finest examples of Ballard stoneware that we have ever offered, this work also serves as a wonderful example of the itinerancy of stoneware decorators and their designs. It was likely decorated by the same hand as a Canada West advertising jug, stamped "JOHN MILLAR / CHEAP CASH STORE / LEORGINAL CW" and bearing the same profuse star motifs, sold as lot 154 in Crocker Farm's July 18, 2015 auction. Excellent condition with two tiny spout chips. H 16".
