Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt and Manganese Decoration, Stamped "A.E. SPENCER", Asa E. Spencer, Portage County, OH, circa 1860, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, brush-decorated with a cobalt-slip flowering plant culminating in spotted tulip motif. Maker's mark highlighted in reddish-brown manganese slip with cobalt stripes emanating from it. Manganese-slip dashes to handle and highlights to handle terminals. Decoration is applied over a dipped slip coating. Appealing stylized design and use of two different colors of slip. Areas of exfoliation to the jug's slip-coated surface. H 12".
