Fine and Scarce Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT;," circa 1870, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a long-tailed bird perched on a heavily-detailed stump, flanked by shrubs. Excellent decoration, color, and size. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Crack across underside forming a spider crack on right side of crock. Light staining to base. Some bubbling to cobalt. H 13 3/4".
