Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Foliate and Star Motifs, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / NEW-YORK," Manhattan, NY origin, first quarter 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with a finely-brushed foliate motif over the maker's mark, flanked by two stars. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Most of handle missing. A spider crack descending from spout on reverse. Some darkened in-the-firing salt residue to right side of jug. A large spider crack on reverse forming a long Y across underside, with the two ends of the Y ending at base on front of jug. As some of this extensive crack is glazed over, it appears that most or all of it occurred in the firing. H 13 1/2".
