Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an intricate slip-trailed design of a daisy plant with central blossom flanked by scrolled stems. Inverted maker's mark at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Fry to cobalt. Light overall staining. A tight, 8 3/4" inverted Y-shaped crack to reverse. A 1 7/8" restored rim chip on reverse, which includes some scratching. Small chips to inner rim for lid. A 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line to shoulder area on front, not visible on interior. A small chip to one handle. Some faint crazing to underside, probably in-the-firing. H 12".
