Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a flowering plant featuring two tulips, two buds, and spot-decorated stems resembling pussy willows. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. An 8 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Heavy staining to reverse. A small rim chip on side of crock. H 10 3/4".
