Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "Jugs" in Cobalt, Stamped "LYONS," NY, Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY, circa 1852, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with the slip-trailed inscription, "Jugs." Slip-trailed "1" above. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. This early Lyons work by Harrington was likely made to advertise the sale of his jugs while showing potential customers a sample of the product itself. Possibly a storefront piece. Very nice condition. Some crazing to midsection on reverse/side. A short, in-the-firing Y-shaped line at base on reverse. Two minor in-the-firing surface nicks to front. Minor traces of old blue paint. Staining. H 11 3/4".
