Rare Stoneware Spittoon with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical form with footed base, recessed opening in top, and carved oval opening at shoulder, decorated around the body with a series of five slip-trailed leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. An unusual form for this maker, featuring rare slip-trailed decoration. Tight cracks to top, one of which continues several inches along top edge. A few chips to opening at shoulder. Minor base chip. Some surface/edge wear. H 5" ; Diam. 7 1/2".
