Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Berries Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of six berries emanating from a forked, leafy branch, each embellished with heavy shading. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. The combined form and size of this crock is rarely seen from this maker, as is the decoration. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. A 1 1/4" rim chip with very old plaster(?) fill. Three additional rim chips. A few minuscule nicks to interior of rim and a thin 2 1/2" fissure to top of rim. H 9 1/2" ; Diam. 13".
