Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock with Lid, Stamped "R.C.R. / PHILA.," Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, decorated around the body with five brushed leaves. Impressed with "R.C.R. / PHILA." maker's mark at base. Includes lid with swag decoration and cobalt around knob, somewhat loose-fitting, but likely original to the crock. Provenance: The Estate of Susan H. Myers, author of Handcraft to Industry and former Smithsonian Curator of Ceramics and Glass. Crock with two vertical cracks from rim on reverse, small rim chips, and staining. Lid with chips to knob, a minor chip to edge, and two minor chips to flange on underside. Dimensions (excluding lid): 7" x 4 1/8" ; Diam. (of lid) 7 1/2".
