Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt-Script Signature, "Smith / & / Day," Norwalk, CT origin, circa 1843-1848, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, featuring the slip-trailed cobalt signature, "Smith & Day," below a cobalt-script "2." Reverse decorated with a slip-trailed flower blossom with X at center. While a large number of slip-script redware dishes from Norwalk, CT have survived, few examples of local stoneware with this treatment are known. Excellent condition with a minor base nick. H 10 5/8".
