Very Rare Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "Grant & Colfax / 1868," OH origin, 1868, wide, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, featuring the slip-trailed inscription, "Grant & Colfax / 1868," for the victorious Republican ticket of Ulysses S. Grant and Schuyler Colfax in the Presidential Election of 1868. Slip-trailed "6" with flourishes below spout. This jug was made in Ohio, Grant's home state, where he won the popular vote 54% to 46% for Democratic candidate, Horatio Seymour. Relatively few examples of American stoneware inscribed with names of presidents are known. Small spout chips. A short crack in top of spout. Firing flaws including salt drips, in-the-firing contact marks, and a surface chip to midsection. Crazing to surface. H 16 1/2".
