Outstanding Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock, Inscribed "HORRAY / FOR / GRANT," OH origin, circa 1868, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the large slip-trailed inscription, "HORRAY (sic) / FOR / GRANT," with flourish below. Slip-trailed "4" at shoulder. This crock was made in Ohio, Grant's home state, where he won the popular vote 54% to 46% for Democratic candidate, Horatio Seymour. Relatively few examples of American stoneware inscribed with names of presidents are known, this example featuring bold slipwork and a charming sentiment. Three in-the-firing rim chips. A 2" in-the-firing flake to top of rim. Spalling to the crock's light slip coating on left side and rim. H 11 3/4".
