Unusual Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, probably NJ origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder, distinctive squared spout molding, and short, ribbed handle. Decorated at the shoulder with a series of brushed swags flanked by two flower blossoms, each composed of four conjoined "watch spring" motifs. Finely-potted form, strong color, and fine decoration based on a classic, 18th century motif. Two small spout chips. Shallow chipping around base. Salt residue to shoulder. Some bubbling to cobalt. Some small in-the-firing pings to reverse. A faint 3 1/4" inverted Y-shaped line to reverse. H 16".
