Exceptional Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or NJ origin, second quarter 18th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with footed base and heavily-tooled shoulder, decorated with three watch spring motifs around the body. A recessed band at the shoulder is highlighted in cobalt slip. Highly unusual size, stylish form and an extraordinarily early example of American stoneware, perhaps dating to the first decade of the craft. Heavy wear to interior of rim. Two restored sections to surface, measuring 2" and 1 1/2". Wear and small chips to rim. Exfoliation to interior an underside. An area of minor surface wear to shoulder. Small spots of flaking to bottom half of jar. A small in-the-firing ping to shoulder and midsection. A 3/4" line on underside, continuing 2 1/4" up body of jar. H 6".
